What: Docent-Led Discussion of Elephant Seals
When: Daily from 10am to 4pm
Reservation Needed: No
In conjunction with Coastal Discovery and Stewardship month in February, Friends of the Elephant Seal will be offering Exploratory and Rookery Tours on Saturdays. These events will include a 90-minute presentation with question and answer period, followed by a Rookery tour to observe the behaviors discussed during the Exploratory.
The Northern Elephant Seal migrates thousands of miles twice each year, from the open oceans to a land-based rookery, where it breeds, births, molts, and rests between trips. The Piedras Blancas rookery, on Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon is home to about 15,000 animals. The area is open for viewing every day of the year and there is no admission fee or reservation required. Come see these magnificent marine mammals up close on one of the prettiest coastlines in California. Best times are late January, late April, and late October. Visit elephantseal.org for more.
Docents are at the rookery daily from 10am to 4pm, and often longer during the busy season. The docents are available to answer questions, show photos and share information about the seals. All docents can be spotted in royal blue coats.
